Vlingo is great!

I love Vlingo! Downloaded it a few hours ago and, after changing a setting and getting it to function correctly, I really love it. I've never really taken to the voice to text software before, mainly because they've never really worked well for me, but Vlingo is easy to use and it really seems to be useful.

There are several reviews on the web so I won't bother going into further detail, but so far it's really nice. And it's free. (y)

Now if they could just make it work with Yahoo IM I would be all set. ;-)

Thank you.

I agree. Vlingo is awesome.

Sandman1967 09-06-2008 03:18 PM

They have a problem with OS 4.5
Things are working great, then I loose sound on my Curve 8300.
I can call someone and it says that I am in a call, but the other party can not hear me and I can not hear them.
Vlingo support told me that this is a problem with OS 4.5
I was told their is nothing that can be done about it and the only way to correct the problem is a battery pull.
I was told that they would get this fixed in the next version and that they would contact me.

When it is working I was really impressed with it!

I was about to download it, until I read their privacy policy, which I find a bit unsettling, especially the part about collecting info from your address book. Even if they claim they can not use it, I still do not feel comfortable with the idea of a company having that info. Just my personal opinion.

"We collect information that you speak or type into a vlingo text box. This is turned into statistical information which vlingo’s speech servers use to adapt to your individual voice in order to provide you with a better experience and for product improvement. We do not and can not use the information we collect from you to identify you as an individual or to identify your device.
We collect names of individuals and companies that appear in your address book, in order to provide a high quality service when you speak a contact name. We do not collect any other information associated with these names such as addresses or phone numbers. We will never use these names to contact anyone for any reason, and we have no way of associating these names with unique individuals or of linking them back to you."

Hmm. So anyone have the final word on vLingo ability to work with 4.5.0.81? I keep getting an API error after installing/reinstalling.

gvgerman 10-19-2008 02:00 PM

Wirelessly posted

I also have the same problems as sandman1967.

stepchild 10-19-2008 06:47 PM

I have 4.5.0.81 and it's working just fine. I find I make more mistakes then it does.

Shaolin 10-20-2008 01:03 PM

I'm running 4.5.0.81 on my Curve, and it works fine, but for some reason my phone sounds didn't work. I won't get notified for voicemails, etc but I get notified for SMS.

Then I make calls and I don't hear anything, but the call connects. So I ended up uninstalling it until the next release.

Interesting... It's supposed to be compatible w/4.5 but I noticed my alarm (BBSmart Alarm Pro) didn't go off this morning... 1st morning since Vlingo reinstalled. Very interesting program. Not sure how much I'd use it but if I find it cripples my alarm program, it's toast until the next version at least.

>> Update... BBSmart Alarms Pro seems to be working fine. For whatever reason, everything's now working normally, so it couldn't have been Vlingo, which I still have installed. The more I check out Vlingo, the more potential I see. It's definitely not for using behind the wheel of a car, but I can see using it alot, especially for replies to email and notes to self.

This is an interesting app - appears to work fine on my Pearl w/beta 4.5.0.97.

Voice recognition ranges from really good to spotty in initial use...we'll see how it goes over time.

But...I did have a strange sort of lock up after installing and playing with it for about 20 minutes - I got a solid red led, but the UI didn't freeze. I was also playing around with Google Maps 2.3.1 Voice Search as well, so not sure who's fault the red led was. Rebooted and things look fine so far.

One thing that disappoints - I wish I could reply to or forward an email by pressing the convenience key and saying "reply/forward with Vlingo." Currently you have to to navigate the BB menu to select those options...

Otherwise on initial light use looks interesting.

One question - is there a way to get it to read received emails/texts?

Just curious, did the red LED getting stuck ever resolve? I am using Vlingo on my Bold, and every time I use it, the red LED stays on until some other program uses the LED or a long period of time passes (like, if there is a bluetooth connection or notice of incoming mail). Also, my screen gets very dim to the point of having no light whatsoever--the only fix I have found is to turn off the autodim feature, but that still does not address the fixed LED signal. I emailed Vlingo and have not received a response. I am just curious whether anyone else has that problem and whether the problem exists on 88XX and 83XX phones as well.

Sorry to double post, but for completeness' sake in regard to my last post above, I am using an AT&T branded Bold on AT&T, upgraded to the .185 OS, and the latest version of Vlingo (version 2.0.0.17434). I had the same problem with the stock (.167) OS. I did not have the problem with my previous AT&T branded 8800 (but that was a previous version of Vlingo and the old OS).

Redflea 11-21-2008 12:00 AM

The red light problem has never come back since the original occurrence.

Good app, I find it useful as a typing shortcut...saves me time. :)

sheldonbk 11-21-2008 08:14 PM

Ended up deleting Vlingo a little while back... way too much work to always correct its errors.

jz214 11-22-2008 01:27 PM

I think it is a fantastic piece of software. It's safer replying to messages/emails, especially for those that drive

Phrozen Horse 11-22-2008 01:41 PM

Latest version has a lot less errors - works well for me. (using the UK English beta version)

I totally agree. It's so easy to send a quick text to someone or even yourself.

Also until they fully upgrade it to work with the Storm (it now renders the voice dialing feature useless as it kills the sound), you can still use the voice to text feature. I just use the normal voice dialing feature on the phone when I want to dial my contacts.
