IPOD Touch Update

FYI, The new ipod touch updates now have mail just like my BB Pearl. HUGE difference is that my ipod touch works via wi-fi and I need a signal to get emails.
I love it and this may make some people re-think where apple is headed with this idea.

??????????

With regards to email... Are you honestly comparing a BlackBerry to an iPod?

I'm happy for you that you can read some of your email on your iPod now... but it's still not even in the same league as a BlackBerry.

Wirelessly posted (8700g: BlackBerry8700/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Is there a perception gap between those who are near a hotspot somewhere or other all the time, and those who aren't. I'm nearly always in cell range, and would have to search for a hotspot except at home or a hotel.

And blackberry email, penquin is right.

and this is news how? this is no different than your iphone on wi-fi. the device is basically the same minus the phone function.

.. and minus the Bluetooth ... and minus the camera ... and minus the microphone ... and minus the speaker ;-)

Sith_Apprentice 01-15-2008 08:53 PM

in terms of recieving emails. i suppose you are correct though, minus the useless crap and the wireless network coverage

Rolo1971 01-16-2008 06:35 AM

Ok guys! My comments were based solely on the email. A function not on any previous ipod. And registering the email was similar as when I registered the emails on my blackberry. Don't read into it too much. I am not taking your BB away.. RELAX!
And the wireless network is a a headache when you have no coverage.

But it will be useful when I am at the airport.

This isn't an personal attack on BB by any means.

Microphone and speaker???My BB has that??????? :)

Rolo1971 01-16-2008 06:41 AM

And I can't help to wonder where apple is headed with this idea. There have been countless threads and articles about threats to RIM and BB. But they are just that!
Many of you are loyal to BB and as long as people have brand loyalty neither organization will lose money or business to some degree.
Don't forget just as there are BB/RIM loyal customers there are also Apple brand loyal customers and both can swear THEIR product is better.
And you stick with what you like or prefer.

I never thought i'd own a BB and wanted the iphone. I have an ibook and imac but the $ tag kept me away from the iphone and I absolutely love my BB Pearl. I am glad I got it and plan to keep it for as long as it lives. I don't work in IT so I don't need the higher end models BB offers either.

Just my opinion!

I personally love the new touch mail. The emails are displayed exactly as if they were on a computer, its really nice. Please, don't stone me to death

i just cant believe they are charging for an update that should be free!

however the moving icons around is nice, and should be very helpful for when the SDK is released :)

I guess you don't own an iPod Touch? ;-)

(The comparison was between an iPhone and iPod Touch...)

Thatzmister2u 01-22-2008 05:53 PM

That would be a BIG 10-4! Mine looks like a tie tac! I was just envisioning my daughters that just has a screen. :)

Rolo1971 01-23-2008 06:57 AM

Muck, I agree that the update should have been free. What is the SDK you mentioned about being released? ????

thanks,
Rolo

An SDK for the iPhone and iPod Touch is being released next month which will allow software developers to write applications for the iPod Touch and iPhone. (Not Web apps... REAL apps.)
Presumably, you'll see a torrent of new applications arrive soon after its release.
How they will be distributed/installed on the device is pretty much up in the air right now... but you can bet it will be controlled by Apple through iTunes and/or the iTunes store.

It's a good thing for iPod Touch and iPhone users.

muck 01-23-2008 07:08 AM

the developers kit, so people can make 3rd party apps for the iphone/touch.

Rolo1971 01-23-2008 08:06 AM

Thanks Penguin & Muck,
WOW...3rd party applications make me nervous because it seems it allows for more problems to arise. Which is why I have NO 3rd party applications on my BB-Pearl. I've read about too many gliches and with my luck i'd be having those problems.
But if these are run through itunes then maybe I'd feel more at ease. I guess my issue is if I have a problem I want to be able to call someone to get it resolved but downloading some application from some nameless site then I feel helpless.

I read something that the Google Maps with Skyhook wifi costs apple to use. They then in turn passed that on to consumers. FYI, its what gives google maps a sudo GPS on the touch and iphone. Iphone also has cell triangulation if no skyhook info is available.

Also, i have read that Apple will be signing off on all the authorized apps that come from the SDK. Similar to what Nokia does with some of theirs.

So is the ipod touch worth a look at? I currently have an ipod video but it seems like the wifi and the bigger screen would be an attraction however I would lose the bigger hard drive.

I personally love the old Outlook email. The emails are displayed exactly as if they were on a computer, not on a little 3.5" screen, its really nice. (Oh yeah, the laptop IS a computer!) And in the few cases when I'm actually in range of wifi during a day of business on the run, I can easily grab that laptop for REAL computer email. Otherwise, the REST of the day its nice that they're ALWAYS there on my Blackberry!
