Remember when....

As the new year is rapidly approaching a little reflection:

* Remember when discussions of "cool" new applications like Pocketday and Todomatrix used to run multiple pages?

* Remember when it was almost magical to be able to get your Exchange email in your pocket?

* Remember when having Outlook Calender and Tasks, liberated you from your desk?

* Remember the folks like Mark R and John Clark (and others) that were always there with an answer?

* Remember when a Blackberry was purely a business tool and there was no BBM and only one game?

* Remember when RIM was at the top of their game and owned this space?

* Remember when......sigh

Happy New Year Everyone.

I feel like I need a shower when I go in there.

My single worst experience with BBM was trying to start a BBM group. Got overrun with porn and spammers in about a week.

I miss Mark Rehjon's contributions, too. Very valuable insights.

Too bad he was a pompous ass, and more likely to be remembered as such.

That was my point. I'm not convinced BBM did much to advance the platform :(

Never interacted with him, so that's news to me. I appreciated his knowledge of BB, though.

When I first got BBM on my 7290 it actually was a valuable business tool, since all company-issued devices were BB's. I could chat with my colleagues easily.

I first made good use of it when coordinating a fire drill evacuation of about 400 people. I could chat with all the contact people without shouting over the phone or sending emails.

Yeah, PIN - > PIN is a great feature for quick business text bursts, but now it's been co-opted for less valuable uses. Have you seen the new RIM Bold commercial over the last few days (the guys on the neon bikes)? I can't believe RIM is still hyping BBM as a primary selling feature. All I could think of while watching it was the use of BBM during the UK Flash Mob riots. Doubt that was the intent of the commercial but that's how I perceived it.

Guess I'm just getting old ;). Happy New Year to all.

Re: Remember when....

RIM tried to push BBM as their own social media platform. Sad to see their desperation coupled with total cluelessness. Imagine a bunch of old guys, sitting around trying to figure out what all the kids were doing nowadays.

"Are they still using their Walkmans?"
"They're using SOMEthing. I see 'em all around the mall when I drive by, those white ear-thingys in their ears. MUST be Walkmans."

I have to disagree. While I believe RIM/BlackBerry made more than a few mistakes, the absence of active marketing on their part was one of the biggest. Maybe the first statement would better reflect what they have been trying to do with BBMM (BBM Music), or their Social Feeds direction when it first came out. I have yet to see or hear anything official from RIM that BBM is their equivalent to FB or Twitter, which it is not, as RIM puts out there own version of those apps.

An IM app is not a Social Media platform. Not even close. Even with the integration with various apps and BBM. I am starting to see a renewed effort by someone(s) at RIM. 'Love What You do', and the newest #BeBold suggests that you and I (read as the consumer) decides what they want out of their devices/experience as opposed to what they are letting us do with it, or showing us what it can do.

Reminds of a survey I did for RIM (actually most of them), specifically, the part where it asks if I would recommend BBM to anyone. I always answer the same; "No". If they do not have a BlackBerry then it's a moot point and if they do, it's like asking if I would recommend water to a fish.

Remember when RIM didn't have co-CEOs, that was a better time.
