Desktop Manager 5.0.1 - IP Modem

Installed DM 5.0.1 so I could use the IP Modem option. This new option is supposed to show up in the Main menu, but it isn't. Has anybody encountered this problem? How can I fix it?

IP Modem disappeared

I actually saw it on the console GUI and then it disappeared within a second. I don't know what the key is to keep it visible yet.

Mines there in 5.0.1
And remains there.

Mine is missing (and not missing)

On my home computer, I have a Storm 9530 with OS 5.0 and DM 5.0.1. The IP modem icon was in the desktop manager at first, but now it is not.

On my work computer, I have a Curve 8320 with OS4.5 and the very same DM 5.0.1 (installed from the same downloaded .exe file) and the IP modem icon is there and usable.

Very strange...

On a side note, which may be related, VZ Access Manager does not work with the 5.0 OS on the Storm. A Verizon tech walked me through a set-up procedure to create a dial-up for it, so I can tether it to my laptop.

If the icon is gone, close BB Desktop Manager, and go to c:/Documents and Settings\all users\application data\research in motion\blackberry to find a file, “ip_modem_configuration.xml”.

Edit it, find your carrier, and set the “enabled” from “false” to “true.”

Then launch Desktop Manager again and it should be there.

Remember, appluication data is a hidden folder, so make sure you can see hidden folders.

Cheers.

Ocassionally, BB Desktop Manager will reset the value to False, in the ip_modem_configuration.xml. This is happening because the wireless provider has disabled this option, so BB DM disables it. So once in a while, the ip_modem_configuration.xml file will need to be changed. I created a copy with the correct changes, then created a batch file that copies the modified file and replaces the original one. Then just, close re-open DM, and it works OK. Those wireless providers want to charge for everything, that is why the do it.

PS : On Windows 7, this file is locked, even with administrator privieleges I cannot modify this file, and many other system files. I need to find out how to work this in Windows 7. At least for Windows XP, with Administrator privileges it works OK.

This is simple to over come. Cut and Paste the file onto your desktop, modify the file, and copy/cut & paste it back into the original folder.

Windows 7 IP Modem config

Couple of things for Windows 7:

1. Location of ip_modem_configuration.xml file: c:\ProgramData\Research In Motion\Blackberry

2. Take ownership of the file then give yourself full control.

3. Right click file and chose edit. If you edit in Notepad, it's going to look ugly, but you can do it. Control F - type your carrier's name (in my case it was Verizon). Change from false to true.

-- I used DreamWeaver to do the edit. Easier on the eyes.

4. Save and exit. In my case, IP Modem did not return to DTM until I connected my 9550 and then started Manager.

Peace

I have tried and tried, unsuccessfully to get my BB to tether via DM.

I keep getting this same error every time: "The remote computer did not respond"

What does that mean?

SD350 01-13-2010 01:30 AM

Someone told me sprint over-rode that feature so it won't work.

Anyone know another way? Anyone on sprint used the Tether app?

arieltf 01-13-2010 10:31 AM

A couple of months ago, when I first installed DM 5.01, the IP Modem icon was there. The icon disappeared soon after. It started showing up again a week ago, after I purchased Tether (a.k.a. TetherBerry). :?

Did I waste my money buying Tether? :x

The IP Modem shows up on my DM. When I went to it, there was something about a $30 monthly charge. Since I have the $30 data plan, is the modem thing and usage included in my data plan for Verizon?

JimmyT1950 04-05-2010 08:28 AM

Since I received no replies to my question, I decided to contact Verizon directly. They told me that since I would be using my blackberry as a modem, the charge would be an additional $30 per month which is above and beyond the $30 a month I am paying for an unlimited data plan. Guess I won't be using their IP Modem option in the desktop manager.

I am using Vodafone Hungary but I am not sure about its vendor ID. I have found 147/148 on the internet, however, this vendor id is already in the XML file for some other country (Belgium maybe, I might be wrong).

Anyone know what the vendor ID is for Vodafone Hungary please?

Thanks, regards,
Andras

Your documentation is correct and thank-you. What threw me off is that depending upon how you install the version 5.0.1 DM, if you select "All Users" your location is correct under All Users. If you install DM using "Only Me" the location of the XML file will be located under the user profile you installed the DM on and not All Users. In a previous post the path was pointed to the user profile and not all users and I could not find it.

I did edit the XML file in Windows7 and for those users who may have this OS you can download an XML Editor for Windows7 available on the MS$ site. Just look for "XML Notepad 2007". When you find the file you can just right click and edit using the MS XML Editor which will show on the right click. I used this XML Editor and it has a find feature and located AT&T, not ATT. Once you find the AT&T entry you can enable the IP Modem icon in DM 5.0.1 following the instructions and changing the value to "True".

I am still missing something as it is not binding the connection inside the DM using the new icon.
Do I need to configure the modem in the control panel??

Thanks everyone for your input using ATT carrier!

FYI:
I found the same issue regarding security and could not gain access but I found out you can take ownership and remove the "All Users" "Deny" that will be listed in the advanced security window. Once that is done you can traverse the folder and edit the file without issue. By default, Microsoft has this as a Windows7 Security setting...

Thanks for the tips...

Do you have the buy-up for tethering?

I am using Vodafone Hungary, I edited the XML file as well adding Vodafone HU with the supposedly correct (?) vendorid but I still cannot see the modem icon in DM.

I am exchanging emails with Vodafone Hungary, and many other experts, but I just don't seem to be able to solve it.
