It looks like you're looking in the wrong temp folder.

You need to be looking in:

c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp

Sometimes the local settings folder is hidden. If you don't see it in the folder with your username, type it manually in the address bar at the top of the file explorer window. Then go to temp. There should be a folder in there with your pin. It's there, you're just missing it. You can search for it even when the switch device wizard is not running. If you've run it once, the folder will still be there, but it will be empty until you start the switch device wizard.

JC, I'm told that Windows 7 doesn't have the Documents and Settings folder. It's C:\Users\username\ and so on

Hrmmm....Well, hopefully someone who has done this on W7 can chime in and give the exact path of where the folder is. I've never used this on Vista or W7. I'm sure it's just in a hidden folder that still isn't showing up. I know some folders don't show up until you type in an exact path to it.

daphne 05-10-2010 12:07 AM

fonejunkie posted the path above in post # 89. ;-)

On Win7:
/Users/{user}/AppData/Local/Temp

Pfffffftttttttttt!!!!!!

It has to be in there somewhere.

*goes back about his business elsewhere*

When I'm done, I restore the .cod files I moved and I move the entire folder to another location so the desktop manager will see the installed apps as wirelessly installed the next time. If you leave the folder after restoring then it won't back them up as wirelessly installed and they won't be in the pin folder next time. Hope that all makes sense.

Wow that was a while ago. :D

Yeah I do same for moving folder, but didn't think on moving cod files.

Thanks.

Yeah, I saw the date but thought someone might find the info useful anyway.

is javaloader.exe availble withour JDE/JDK?

John,
I've combed thru several posts regarding javaloader.exe and your seems to be the most comprehensive, so I hope you forgive if this post is slightly off topic.

My goal/request is to find if there is a simpler means of obtaining javaloader.exe than by downloading the JDE or JDK.

My issues are that I wish to use oppitronic's bbscreenstream which I found referenced in an older post. I would post links but don't have the privilege yet.

I am using an 8 gig netbook and I am running out of storage space. I am not a developer, so have no desire for the JDE/JDK. I simply wish the fewest files possible, with the smallest file size "footprint" to allow for the use of the BBScreenStream utility for presentation and training purposes. Is this a pipe dream or do I have to download all the developer files to get what I desire
?

Thanks,
Kyle

You can get it from this very small application:

Thanks for the procedure it just saved me many hours of work. It worked fine with a couple of minor exceptions. All of the applications were installed but the locations of the files needed to be changed (very minor issue) but more importantly even though it restored the applications it did not restore the application setting. The most important of which (in my case) is I have Opera Mini installed and it did not restore my bookmarks so I lost them all.

The data in 3rd party apps is never retained during any wipe and restore or OS upgrade/downgrade. This has always been the case. Some 3rd party app developers have created their own back/restore features in the individual apps making restoring a little easier.

So, if I get this straight:

1. The procedure described in this post will backup Applications (but not Application Data)

2. Desktop Manager's backup/restore feature will backup PIM (calendar, contacts...) and device settings (but not Applications or Aplication Data)

3. Therefore, there is no way to backup/restore Application Data. This is the case for both a wipe handheld AND a OS upgrade.

Am I right?

Thanks.

Correct.

Since this thread's original post has been so very helpful to me since my Blackberry Curve 8300, I figured I'd post an update to this using Blackberry Desktop Manager 6 and Windows 7.
  • Plug in the device and run Desktop Manager.
  • Click on “Device” menu at top left of window
  • Click on “Switch devices...”
  • A window opens, showing your device. Click on your device.
  • A window with two checkboxes opens. They are Device Data and Third-Party Applications. Uncheck the Device Data box.
  • Click “Next"
  • When it’s finished backing up the apps, DO NOT click “Next” or “Cancel.” Leave that screen as it is and continue these instructions.
  • Search your computer files/folders for a folder labled with your pin number. Be sure and search in hidden and system files. Hint from BBF member NextelUser: Open Windows Explorer or My Computer and type in %temp% to find your temp folder with the folder labeled as your pin number.
  • When you find it copy it to another location.
  • Now go back and “Cancel” the Switch Device Wizard. If you cancel the wizard before copying the folder to another location the folder is automatically emptied.
  • Now wipe your device as desired. Your backup is complete.
Restore:
  • When the OS has been loaded back to the device run Application Loader (default location is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader) again and click on “Add”
  • Browse to the folder you copied with your PIN. Double click on the file named yourpin.alx.
  • This should add all your 3rd party apps to the apploader.
  • Finish the installation to load them to your BB.
  • After the 3rd party backups have been restored, move, rename or delete the folder you pointed to using the "Add" feature in DM. Failure to do so will cause subsequent backups to skip any application that was contained in the original backup. See the note below.
  • Restore your personal data using the restore feature in Desktop Manager Backup/Restore

Note: If you are wiping the device because of a problem this procedure may not be wise to perform because the cause of the trouble could possibly be in one of the 3rd party apps.

Note: If you ever use one of these backups to restore an app or multiple apps back to your device you'll need to move the folder to a new location after restoring. If you leave it in the same location then the next time you perform this backup procedure any apps included in the original will not be backed up in the temp/yourpin folder since they are already recognized by Desktop Manager as being in another location. So, after restoring your app(s) simply move the pin folder to a new location, rename it or delete it.

Re: How To: Backup and Restore All Installed 3rd Party Apps

Thank for info...very usefull for me...

Didn't read Forum post before replacing BB

My BB needed to be replaced. They sent me a replacement. i did not read this post ahead of time so I though backing it up was enough. now that I no longer have old device, most of my paid and free apps are gone. Does this mean I need to start over with app world and re-buying apps or is there some way to recover this? thanks, Signed Stupid.

Re: How To: Backup and Restore All Installed 3rd Party Apps

Even if you did back them up and restore them you would need new registration codes for any paid-for app ad the codes are tied to the pin and you have a new pin. Some developers will give you a new code and some you will have to repurchase.

Re: How To: Backup and Restore All Installed 3rd Party Apps

For Windows7, the backup app temp folder is located at:
C: Users > (yourname)> AppData > Local > Temp (don't bother looking for the temp folder until the backup has been completed, I found this out the hard way).

Re: How To: Backup and Restore All Installed 3rd Party Apps

Click on the Start button and type %temp% in the search box. A quicker way of getting to the Windows 7 temp folder.
