4.2.2 firmware issue

I have not come across this anywhere else on the forum this morning...apologies if I've missed it:

Please be aware that there are issues with BlackBerry 4.2.2 handheld firmware and calendar/reminder synchronisation. Not all users are affected, and the following three issues have been identified:

§KB13420 Reminder notifications for calendar appointments may not display on the BlackBerry smartphone

oCause: The reminder manager is unable to find the appointment to remind the BlackBerry smartphone user.
oNote: This issue also affects BlackBerry smartphones that are using the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server and that contain a BlackBerry® Internet Service [CICAL] service book on the BlackBerry smartphone.
§KB13419 Unable to synchronize calendar with duplicate entries from BlackBerry Internet Service integration

oCause: The first BlackBerry Internet Service CICAL service book sent inherits the appointments from the base system calendar (calendar appointments which were created before any calendar service books were sent to the BlackBerry smartphone). The last BlackBerry Internet Service CICAL Service sent to the BlackBerry smartphone will be the default calendar.

o Notes:
  • This issue does not affect BlackBerry smartphone users that are associated with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or only have one email account integrated into the BlackBerry Internet Service.
  • New appointments created after the last BlackBerry Internet Service CICAL service book is sent, will not be affected and work as expected.
  • Appointments created before the last BlackBerry Internet Service CICAL service book was sent will be affected.
§KB13330 Calendar entries created on the BlackBerry device will not synchronize to the email client when performing a wired synchronization

oCause: All Calendar entries are saved to the base system calendar of a BlackBerry smartphone that is not activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Entries in the base system calendar are only recognized by the Calendar application on the BlackBerry smartphone; therefore, any external application (Backup and Restore, Intellisync®, PocketMac for BlackBerry smartphones, etc.) will not recognize the Calendar entries.
oThe Number of Entries in the Calendar options shows the number of calendar entries in the service calendar (BlackBerry Enterprise Server).

The affected software versions are:

4.2.2 Bundle 148 - 4.2.2.66
4.2.2 Bundle 150 - 4.2.2.67
4.2.2 Bundle 164 - 4.2.2.75
4.2.2 Bundle 171 - 4.2.2.81
4.2.2 Bundle 176 - 4.2.2.85
4.2.2 Bundle 186 - 4.2.2.89
4.2.2 Bundle 188 - 4.2.2.90
4.2.2 Bundle 192 - 4.2.2.89
4.2.2 Bundle 207 - 4.2.2.103
4.2.2 Bundle 218 - 4.2.2.112

Resolution:
RIM are putting together a website outlining all of this and with details of a patch/workaround, which is looking to go live on the 29th June/3rd July.

Hmm. This is some really good info as I am new to BB and wanted to know what the heck is going on here. WHat is your take on a fix to this phone? I have the VZW 8830.

Well it's a funny one really. I don't think it's too big of an issue. If you look at the KB's you'll see that most of is to do with service books on devices which collect both BIS and BES mail to the same device. I think RIM are just being careful on it and it's nice to see they're on top of things. What's funny is that we run a ton of devices running this code and many of them collect mail from BIS and BES and we haven't had a single problem, so it's more of a potential issues that 'can' affect devices.

Is the memory issuse a problem yet no matter what I do I barley have any memory on my 8830 and don't have any third party software.

John Clark 06-22-2007 12:08 PM

This doesn't have to do with the memory issue.

zerog46 06-22-2007 01:14 PM

Oh I know that but does anyone know if RIM has any fix coming out fo the memory issue, or is there even an issue, maybe I need a new phone.

John...

So, based on my post in the link about Calendar Sync problems you posted this url. Do you think that since I have 3 emails set up via BIS that if I only had 1, I may not have any issues? My concern is that transferring calendar entries from the blackberry to the desktop still may not be resolved until the fix comes out. RIM told me on the phone today that my issues were not fixable until the carriers (AT&T) finished their QC on the code for the fix.

John Clark 06-22-2007 10:21 PM

I couldn't tell you. I just thought I'd draw your attention to the thread and the RIM KB's.

mshykind 06-22-2007 10:47 PM

Thanks John...I appreciate it. The rep at RIM was pretty confident that there was no fix in place right now and that I'd have to wait...so I think I'll check with them in a week or so and see what they say. They were very helpful...I was surprised...they gave me a toll free number to call them back to check up on the fix and I think he said they'd even call me when it was ready...we'll see if they do!

John Clark 06-22-2007 11:27 PM

Did you try the workarounds listed in the KB's posted above?

mshykind 06-24-2007 05:23 PM

I actually found that KB on the BB website and they did have a specific workaround:

Clear and restore the calendar database on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Using BlackBerry Desktop Manager, backup the BlackBerry smartphone calendar database. For instructions, see KB11297.
Clear the BlackBerry smartphone calendar database using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. For instructions, see KB05340.
Resend the BlackBerry Internet Service service books to the BlackBerry smartphone. For instructions, see KB02830.
Restore the calendar data to the BlackBerry smartphone. For instructions, see KB10339. This will place all of the calendar appointments in the BlackBerry Internet Service [CICAL] calendar, which will be synchronized.

I had already taken the 8300 back on Friday as I'd spent 3 hours with it, and couldn't afford to spend any more time. I was thinking about going back to the AT&T store and re-purchasing one and trying it again, but I wound up going golfing instead (I figured I would have been in front of the computer all day if I bought the 8300 trying to get it to work!).

My initial concerns about it, besides the sync issues, is that it really lagged compared to the 8700 that I have now. I bought the 8800 a few months ago when it came out, and noticed the same thing. I was hoping the 8300 would be a bit faster (switching between apps, answering a call while typing an email, etc...) since it didn't have GPS to bog it down. Do you have one? If so, have you noticed these issues?

My needs are really served best with the 8700...but with a 2 year old and a 4 year old, I can see using the camera. I used the camera on my Audiovox SMT 5600 all the time before I switched to the BB, but I hate to compromise performance during the week for a few pix of the kids on the weekends (I get about 150 emails/day and usually 4-5 hours of talk time, so I really noticed the difference when I went to the 8800 from the 8700).

mshykind 06-26-2007 01:37 PM

OK...I bought a new Curve today, and I don't know what I did, but everything is sync-ing fine now. I backed up my 8700, then installed the file to the 8300 first, then AFTER that, I went to the BIS website and changed devices and sent the service books. Now, everything works fine...no double entries and I can send from BB to Outlook too. So, I don't know (and I don't care) how I did it, but at least I can sync the 8300 to Outlook now!

Newest versions availaible.

Does anyone know what is the newest version out there. I have 4.2.2.66. Should I upgrade to the newest one?

John Clark 06-26-2007 08:42 PM

4.2.2.240/4.2.2.123 just released today *should* fix this issue.

Anyone seen the phantom patch yet?:?

John Clark 07-03-2007 06:14 PM

Yes. There is a sticky for the latest OS in the 8300 forum. Look at the top of the 8300 forum for the Optus 8300 OS. This OS fixes the calendar issues. It works on all Curve's.

My fantasy....

I guess I was expecting maybe the primary carrier, AT&Tingular to actually provide a fix, but i guess I'm still living in the fantasy world of my childhood 1/2 centry ago!

John Clark 07-03-2007 06:27 PM

The Optus released OS will work fine on your AT&T Curve. You won't be able to tell the difference. All the OS's are written by RIM and released to the carriers. The carriers decide when/if/which OS to release to their customers.

I am using an AT&T OS on my 8100 right now.

8830 calendar sync

So...IS there a way to persuade BB to calendar-sync with Outlook? (Both ways, no dupes.) Any clue as to the mysterious phantom website with the solution to this problem? (Using Verizon, v4.2.2.66) Thanx ~
