Very Hefty Data Roaming charges in Dubai

The national carrier Etisalat charges approx US$5.50 for 10kb of data minimum. So even if u download data 2-3kb they levy this minimum charge, whihc translates to US$5,50 per email. I ended up paying almost US$80 per day for each of the 4 days I was there. Apparently even when the BB logged on to the server to check for emails, I was charged $5,50 which was several times a day. Any comments, observations, advice ?

Shut down data services while there. Then only use wifi for data.

Thanks for your reply.
I tried doing that here in my house where I have wifi, but with Data services off the BB does not download any emails ? Anything else to configure ?

Use bb browser to access your emails online. Not the most productive way of doing it, but it gets the job done in a pinch.

How can he use the bb browser with Data services turned off?

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear with my post: turn data connection on when in free wifi area!!!

Thanks for catching that. :)

Right, since it is data. Not sure what you can do if you don't want to incur such high rates, but also want your emails.

I guess this is the story your carrier tells you. -- I visit Dubai regulary, and while I hate the data roaming charges (that are unfortunately all over the place), I never had this kind of charges.
