This is SICK!!!! I'm a little worried about privacy though...now google knows where I am!

wiskeydog2 04-24-2006 11:14 PM

I know totally worth it though, saves me 10 bucks a month!!! LOL

Next to email, this is by far the best application available.

For those confused, as I was, this is not the same as Google Local (http://www.google.com/glm).

This is Google Local with location tracking!!

Download it now! (http://www.google.com/gmm)

I don't think we have two different programs here, guys.

From the Google Maps FAQ:

"I just downloaded Google Maps, and now I have two different versions of the application on my phone: Google Maps, and Google Local. Do I need both of them?
No. In fact, we recommend you keep Google Maps, and delete Google Local."

Man, I was excited for second...

Yipee! This one works for me. Since our company went to BES 4.0 we have the MDS service book but no MDS service. Google was choosing this service as default so would not work for me. This one works... Thanks Google...

What's location tracking?

HuwSy 04-25-2006 04:12 AM

I assume it connects to the GPS, available in some Bb models, possibly across bluetooth to a GPS also, and showt the map of your current location.

teydus 04-25-2006 04:30 AM

"Does Google Maps use GPS to figure out where I am?
Google Maps doesn't use any GPS technology, even if your phone has a built in GPS location device. "

wibbly 04-25-2006 07:30 AM

It will be be based on geolocation of the cell ID you're connected to. I'm looking forwards to when any of thsi comes to google.co.uk. At the moment I can see the satellite images, but no directions, streets, etc :-(

Not really -- mapping software and GPS navigation software aren't the same thing. Close, but not the same.

jefwic 04-25-2006 07:50 AM

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't think that this Google has "location tracking". Please let me know if someone does figure out how to use it.

Such location based services ARE available in the UK at least. You pay for the service and you can find the location of a phone based on the cell it's connected to. There's a protocol where the phone user has to accept that they want to be tracked too.

http://www.mobilelocate.co.uk/

If Google offered such a service for free they would no doubt have to absorb the costs. But they do that for their "search by SMS" service today in the UK. User just pays normal text charge for the outgoing text query.

jefwic 04-25-2006 08:13 AM

I think that is through your cell provider - the cell provider tracks you by tower, and uses their program to send you your location information.

Google itself does not offer location tracking services.

I just downloaded it, I don't see where it shows where I'm at currently or how to get directions to a certain location if I were to be moving. what am i missing?

andreww747 04-25-2006 10:06 AM

I can't find tracking stuff either. I'm on TMO.

FightingDevil 04-25-2006 10:23 AM

Make that a third comment about not being able to figure out how to show the current location...anyone got an idea?

You were able to get it to work on T-Mobile? The Google site says that the app won't work on T-Mobile phones, and when I try to launch it, I get an error saying that the app is trying to connect to a location both inside and outside the firewall, which is against the IT policy on this BlackBerry.

I'll fourth that.

I don't think it shows your current location. At least not on a TMO 8700g. Well, unless you type it in.
