OS: 8220 4.6.0.281/4.6.0.155 (English + MultiLanguage)

Software For BlackBerry® Kickstart (TM) 8220 smartphone BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.0.281 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.6.0.281
Consisting of:
  • Applications: 4.6.0.155
  • Software Platform: 4.1.0.55
  • File name: 8220M_PBr4.6.0_rel281_PL4.1.0.55_A4.6.0.155_..exe
  • File size: 87.97MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 8220 (make sure the device is not plugged into the PC before installing:)

1. Make sure you have Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 or higher installed. DM version 4.6 is recommended. If you don't already have it installed you can download it using the link below:
BlackBerry Operating System Downloads - BlackBerryFAQ

2. Download the OS file listed above from here or here to the PC then install it to the PC by double clicking the file.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

4. Plug in BB (make sure you're connecting directly to the pc--no hubs) and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

For the previous OS version click here.

Note For Advanced Users Only: If you plan on deleting the cod file for pre-installed media your exterior LCD will not function correctly. This does not pertain to people doing normal installs. You will not be effected.

I have .151 on mine. Does anyone know what the differences are as of yet? Will it improve anything?

NJBlackBerry 10-18-2008 08:15 AM

Unfortunately the carriers never include the release notes...

Well, as soon as the wife's arrives on Monday, if the OS is older than this, I'll update it before she gets her hands on it.

Tmobile released with .151 so if its a Tmo device this is an upgrade.

Right. When we played with it at the Tmo store, that is the OS that was on it. I am presuming that the one they shipped will have the .151 OS. Therefore, I will get home before her and update the OS before she gets to play with it. :) hehehehe

That would be a first. I have used a lot of "non-Tmobile" OS's on our BB's and have never had that problem. I guess I will find out this evening when I upgrade the wife's 8220. ;-)

NJBlackBerry 10-20-2008 12:58 PM

Same thing here - 310-260 instead of T-Mobile.

Was very interesting as I showed it to the two T-Mobile folks in my office.

Yeah I've done plenty of upgrades with many different blackberrys and never seen anything like that. Weird huh

robertcs 10-23-2008 09:51 PM

John Clark 10-23-2008 09:52 PM

No, it works only on the 8220.

It's not on the Rogers site. It's on the Blackberry site, under support, downloads, device software.

Google "Rogers BlackBerry Download". Worked like a chance.

Attention to detail...I need more sleep. :P

EDIT: I guess the header of this thread needs to be updated with the new version.
