Red Or Blue - political application for the Berry...
red | blue (pronounced 'red or blue') is a free Java™ app that figures out where you stand, or perhaps more accurately, where you are standing in our politically polarized country.

Neat! A political tricorder!
Surprise, we Canadians also got polarization problems recently too (maybe not as bad....maybe worse....knock on wood....time will tell if our government collapses!) Our polarized parliament just opened their first session recently with some drama in the first days. Essentially, a minority government which historically do not last long in Canada, and four parties are represented with significant number of seats. There is an exact even split 50-50 for Liberal/NDP potential "alliance" versus PC/PQ potential "alliance", with a single independent with the deciding vote. (The closest USA equivalent is an exact 50-50 split in the USA Congress, except there's four parties instead of two.) Sorry, this probably belongs in the Off Topic forum! |
Out of curiousity, does Canada even have a conservative party?
|
Yes. PC equals "Progressive Conservatives". They are more centrist than the U.S. Republicans but they are much more conservative than the Liberals party. The Canadian Progressive Conservatives are roughly between the USA Democrats and Republicans, give or take, although many people argue whether they're a little closer to Republicians or a little closer to Democrats.
The Progressive Conservative are currently in a pseudo-alliance (unoffical alliance) with Parti Quebecois, for an exact 50% representation of our Parliament. This creates fireworks in our government when trying to pass laws. There's fireworks going on battling new legislation. Historically, minority governments usually collapses in Canada, which can mean a new vote before 4 years, and usually less than 2 years later. Currently, the Liberals are sort of in a pseudo-alliance with the NDP (New Democratic Party). Basically 2 parties versus 2 parties, making an exact 50-50 split. There's a sole independent. If the other 4 parties are polarized on a specific legislation -- A TIE -- then the sole Independent that potentially can hold a powerful deciding vote on passing legislation. Oh my! However, three out of four parties with seats have relatively liberal agendas. The battles are over things like Quebec, money transfers between provinces, cutting or expanding military, etc. All the usual bickering you hear about USA politics, except the Canadian version is watered down with a lot less venom and a lot less vitrol (so far). But either way, we definitely somewhat more polarized than we usually are. Just like right now in USA. So we feel for you! (Just so everyone knows -- don't post voter preferences online on this forum -- It's Mount St. Helens league flamebait. The big politics forums are a flotilla of flaming supertankers these days!) |
actually
The Progressive Conservative Party no longer exists. it merged with the canadian alliance party to become the Conservative Party of Canada. The word Progressive is no longer part of the party or its name. which is a shame given the Red-Tory tradition in Canada.
