BB 9670 - Style - clamshell

Quick demo from Boy Genius Report and Engadget

If you are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the BlackBerry clamshell flip-phone xxx8212; the 9670 Style xxx8212; we have a little intel to hold you over. It looks as if three tutorial-style (pun intended) demo videos have made their way onto everyonexxx8217;s favorite streaming video website YouTube. As previously reported, the Style will have a full-QWERTY keyboard, CDMA and Wi-Fi radios, GPS, 5 megapixel camera, 240 x 320 external display resolution, and 360 x 400 internal display resolution. The demo videos are of the home screen, zooming function, and external display functionality of the device. The three videos are waiting for you after the break, let us know what you think.

Wow, looks like another fine product from Research In (slow)Motion. Didn't flip phones go out of style years ago?? Can this company be any further out of touch.

So argon, what is your "opinion" of phones which are in style?

I actually like the design of the Torch, even though the screen resolution is last years tech.

And it doesn't care how you hold it!

I'm just upset it's a Sprint exclusive. I actually wanted one!

Make that two of us, I happen to always have liked a clam shell design, less damage on screen.

There is still a large segment of the cell phone using population that insists on flip phones. Dunno why, but I know a few folks who won't use anything else. This is RIM's attempt to market a BlackBerry to those folks.

I don't know about the wisdom of that strategy. Flip phone users are a notoriously low-tech bunch, using their phones for (gasp!!) voice calls primarily. Not exactly the crowd that will embrace the BlackBerry platform.

The Style could also be just another form factor for RIM. Trying something different, maybe generate a little excitement. Again, perhaps a dubious strategy, but a lot will hinge (no pun intended!) on execution. The original Pearl Flip 8200 was very poorly made. Creaky and a ton of lag in the OS. And the screen was too small for reading/composing emails comfortably.

We'll see how RIM does on their second attempt. I'm going to take a look, but it's got to be a pretty spiffing piece of kit to get me to lay down my 9650!

I saw one today. Design is actually pretty nice. Unlike others, I waited until I could actually see it before making a judgement. I won't ever buy one, but I think it will have a nice market.

I saw a non-functioning demo unit today. I too was quite impressed. The keyboard is a full QWERTY and not at all cramped. The screen is slightly larger than my Bold's screen. These were my two primary concerns. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the 8200 Pearl Flip, which was a disaster at least from the execution standpoint.

I've learned my lesson about being an early adopter with RIM products. I will wait until there are a ton of user stories about the Style, but I'm leaning strongly towards getting this.

Been using the device close to a week - works great! OS 6.0 is awesome. While some people hate a "flip" design I personally find it easier to slip in my pocket and not worry about anything scratching the screen or keyboard.

Thats why I was going to get one, but the Torch came out first.

I also am on AT&T and my company is a PITA when wanting a diff carrier.

DANGIT, yet another Blackberry not available for T-Mobile.

That70sGAdawg 10-30-2010 10:43 PM

Checked it out at best Buy today. It has everything (except 80 of 480 lines of screen resolution) that the "great" 9780 has coming spec wise. A larger screen than the "bold" too. - and a second screen on the front. A Retro jewell. Gonna try it out! Tomorrow is the day.

Activated last night and so far all is good, I do like the new OS especially the BBM style. Haven't had to much time to go thru everything yet but will have more time this Friday at the airport.....more to follow......

One thing I didn't like was that when I hit the Menu button I got a drop-down menu rather than just getting the app screen. You have to choose "Open Tray" to get there. That kind of thing really gets under my skin.

djdonnyk 11-04-2010 10:10 PM

I hear ya rambo, I just tap it twice real quick and it works a little better.
