Yahoo Messenger Privacy in a BES Account?
Here's a privacy question for a BES Admin: 1) Are actual transcripts of my Yahoo Messenger chats routinely logged by my corporate BES admin? 2) Or can they just be "monitored" (perhaps viewed live??) if they happen to see a chat going on and/or see statistics for overall usage without actual text transcripts? 3) If transcripts of the Yahoo IM sessions are logged, how troublesome is it for a small company to do that (e.g. would my BES admin IT person even bother or does it require them to install 3rd party sotware?)
Some BES ITs are saying that you can/do actually log transcripts of EVERYTHING including IM chats within 3rd party apps like Yahoo IM (Messenger), while others say you can only "monitor" use--as in "I know you're accessing Yahoo Messenger and when, but I don't know what you're actually saying." C'mon, you peeps are holding your cards pretty tight to your chest on this one! Anyone willing to give up the real story? Do you see stored logs of Yahoo Messenger IM transcripts or not? Thank you! |
Welcome to the Forums. A search using just the word "privacy" brought up numerous finds. A few are below. This is a topic that has been beat to death. I would suggest that a search will yield some good information.

Yahoo IM Privacy thru BES
Thanks Penguin3107. I'm assuming you do this sort of thing for a living (?), since you are very, ah, assured in your response!
I was sure there *must be* a way for the BES Admin to view and log Yahoo IMs since several at Crackberry say there is, but I figured it simply wasn't a simple "default" setting for them or that they had to go to extra lengths to get it set up. Nice to know that there just isn't software for that...yet. |

If you are worried about it, then a good policy to follow is always assume the worst so you never do or say anything that you might later regret.

Actually, there is at least one third-party product (for legal compliancy and discovery), CommonDesk, that can log message conversations from the official IM clients from RIM (Yahoo, GTalk, AIM, ICQ, MSN). With that said, it uses an application that would reside on your device.
CommonDesk I don't think I ever visited their website until now. I believe they need a new web designer. Their product is quite interesting, though. Out of the box, without implementing a rather expensive third-party solution, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Worst case scenario is to download/purchase a third-party IM client (BeeJive, IM+, etc). |
