Signal strength bars obscured by "ABC"

Is there any way to hide the "ABC" text type indicator? It frequently stays on the home screen even after I've made sure to close any application that might have a text field (such as the address book). I can press alt to change it to an arrow so I can at least see the first three bars but I'd like for it to disappear completely when I'm at the home screen

If the ABC is present, you have multi-tap mode on, instead of suretype.

Yeah I prefer to type with multi tap and I keep the phone in that mode all the time. The ABC icon doesn't stay on all the time though.

I've noticed it'll stay on if I was using a program that has a text field I was editing and I escaped back to the home screen rather than actually close the program. When I hold alt+back, bring the program back up, and close it by way of the menu, the ABC icon will usually disappear.

There some times where I don't have anything but the standard, non-closable programs running and the ABC icon stays on at the home screen. I'm trying to figure out why the ABC icon stays on in those situations and how to get rid of it

this has been a bug in most of the OS's that have been out simple take it out of multi tap to fix the probelm

Well that's pretty aggravating. At least I know its not just me but these little quirks are really starting to annoy me

I agree. I use the 8700 and thought it would be hard but it was easy for me to learn it quickly.

If switching to sure type means I won't have to deal with that ABC thing anymore I guess I'll give it a shot. Thanks for all the replies(y)

To Switch typing input methods
In the device options, click Language.
Perform one of the following actions:
To use the multi-tap input method, set the Input Language field to <Language> Multitap.
To use the SureTypexxx8482; input method, set the Input Language field to <Language>.
Press the Menu key.
Click Save.

It's actually much easier than that....go to any field where you can enter text (i.e. compose email) and push and hold the "sym" key. that will toggle it back and forth. If that doesn't work for some reason, the above posters method will work, too.
