OS6.0.0.534 Problem

Installed the update with no problems. However, a strange thing is occurring. The spinning clock icon will take control for very long times (up to 60 seconds) and my battery life has gone to hell. I'm pretty sure that I have configured something wrong and it is not the operating system. However, I have no idea what I did wrong.

6.0.0.534
BES
Yahoo Mail
Apps
Xobni
Ascendo Datavault
Worldmate
BeWeather
Kindle
Fixmo

Any suggestions?

Re: OS6.0.0.534 Problem

I just updated to .534 yesterday as well on my 9700 and I am experience the same problems.
I checked the device's CPU usage here: Options->Device->Application Mgmt->CPU Now
and when I stopped pressing buttons and just watched which applications were using up the CPU, I found that 'Phone' was using 99% of it!
This screen refreshes every 5 seconds. I'm not making any phone calls whatsoever.
Any idea why the CPU usage for 'Phone' would be so high?

I have the same thing, but maybe that is normal. Does Phone control the wireless connection? If so, it is not surprising to see it using a bunch of the CPU when it is the only thing running.

I just confirmed with a colleague that the 'Phone' item should not be using 99% of the CPU resources all the time. He has the 9700 with the previous .442 OS. His shows 0% usage when he let's the meter settle.

WonkotheSane - did you get this .534 update via the Upgrade function on your Bberry device or by downloading it from the website?

I downloaded the file. I'm not on Bell Mobility, so this update won't happen through the desktop (at least without downloading and installing the file).

I think I may have identified the problem. After the above posts, I wiped everything off of my phone using BB Swiss Army Knife. I then reinstalled .534. The plan was to take everything one step at a time and monitor the phone's behavior. After the new installation (using BBSAK), I opened BB Desktop to trigger a reactivation. When it was done, I was surprised to see that it had restored my data. In the previous install, I had done a restore AND reactivated. My guess is that this double restore process loaded in some critical files in two places, which blew the operating system's mind (specifically the phone module's mind). The phone is way down the list of CPU usage now.

My plan is to install my apps one at a time to see if the problem re-emerges. However, I think the double restore was the problem. I'll post with results of this experiment.

Ok, thanks. This time I downloaded the file and tried reinstalling .534 through Desktop Manager. It is still updating so I'll let you know if it fixes things.

Well, I got the problem to reappear. It happened right after I installed Ascendo Datavault. The strange this is the problem kept on after I deleted Ascendo. I'm guessing that it wrote over one of the Phone's files. Back to the reinstall.

Well 6 hours later after fully reinstalling .534 through Desktop Manager I still have the same problem .. so frustrating.

WonkotheSane - Are you using any special themes or the default theme?

I do see the clock every so often in .534 on my 9780, but it is rare and not for more than a few seconds, however, I never saw it in any previous version of OS6, and I've tried them all.

Stevew - When you go into your CPU usage screen, do you see 'Phone' occupying 90%+ of the usage?

To check this:
Options->Device->Application Mgmt->CPU Now
Note: the screen refreshes every 5 seconds so you have to watch it for 10-15 seconds without pressing any buttons or moving the cursor.

Ours show 'Phone' at 90% usage or more at all times..

I'm using the default theme. I think I found what is triggering it, but I have no idea how to fix it. After the last problem, I reinstalled .534. After re-installation, the Phone CPU problem was gone. I then installed a different app and the Phone CPU problem was back again. The common element is that I used the browser to download the apps that triggered the problem. Another strange thing: it didn't ask me if I wanted to allow the downloaded apps into the trusted zone. I'm done messing with it. I'm loading .480 tomorrow morning.

No, it shows between 9-20% most of the time...

Update: I reloaded .480 and all of my apps. Everything is copacetic. I took it off of the charger early this morning and it still has 85% of the battery life left. Whatever was triggering the Phone CPU problem appears to be too deep in the OS for me to figure out. It's frustrating that most people do not seem to be having this problem, so it is fixable. I guess I'll just wait for the .6xx update and hope they have it worked out.

Further update: I tried .534 again, this time using the BBdesktop to do the update. It reloaded all of my apps and all of my data. It ran fine for a while, and then the Phone CPU problem returned for no apparent reason. The more I try, the less I understand this. I give up ... again.

Tubby, are you on a BES system with a large company? I'm not sure, but I think the high CPU usage is the Phone building an index list for the whole company. If so, it should settle down after a few days. I just installed .546. I'll let it run for a couple of days and see if the usage settles down.

The phone doesn't index a corporate GAL. So it can't be that.
The correct troubleshooting is (always) to back up the data. Wipe out the phone, reload JUST the OS and data. See how it runs. Then add apps back one at a time.

Good advice, but I've done that twice to no avail. Is there something that the Desktop might be reloading when I reactivate? Why is it fine with .480 and a problem with .5xx.

Not if you use Loader.exe - it won't loade anything without your explicit approval.
