BIS and IMAP account issues

I have been having really slow mail delivery, sometimes an hour or more delay.
I have a .mac account. I know that IMAP is a little delayed to begin with and I really cannot have "real time" conversations. (please correct me if I am wrong)
I was wondering if anyone else had the same issues as of late?

In my experience with IMAP there will be delays. Ive only experienced real time synchronization with BES.
