BBIrc and jmIRC
 

I can use jmIRC if I am not activated on the BES. From the product description BBIrc says it will work with BES/MDS. Just curious if anybody knows for sure. I am not sure of what all was added to BBIrc from jmIRC.

I've been using jmIrc (0.95) using the HTTP proxy supplied with it to bypass the restrictions set by my company's BES and firewall. Have you tried using that?

I've not used BBIrc, I was scared away by the fact that it didn't seem to have been updated in several years. If you've tried it, I'd be interested in knowing your experiences. I'm specifically looking for a feature where it can vibrate the device when someone mentions my nick. An alert notification (like the new mail indicator) on the home screen would be wonderful also.

I didn't get BBirc for the same reason yet.

What are you using for HTTP Proxy settings? A company proxy or something else?

The jmIrc Sourceforge page has an HTTP proxy Java app (HttpIrcProxy.jar), which you can execute on a PC to listen for the incoming jmIrc-tunnelled requests. That's what I use currently. I like that it allows you to set a password.

The command I use to run the proxy is:
'java -jar HttpIrcProxy-0.37.jar -p 80 -w mypass'

That sets it up to listen on port 80 and requires jmIrc to provide the password 'mypass' before it will proxy the request.


I've not tried using another HTTP proxy, but I could try it out for you if you wish.

No... you don't have to be connected to the PC, it works over-the-air.

When you're on a BES, all traffic that jmIrc sends out will be tunnelled over-the-air to your BES (using MDS), and then the BES will send the traffic out to the internet to the IRC server.

BB -> (cellular/wifi) -> BES -> (wired Internet) -> IRC server

By telling jmIrc to use the proxy, the traffic will still go over the air to the BES first, but then the BES will send it to the proxy machine instead (because the BES thinks it is HTTP traffic), and the proxy machine will actually make the request to the IRC server.

BB -> (cellular/wifi) -> BES -> (wired LAN) -> HttpIrcProxy -> (wired Internet) -> IRC server

So the proxy would have to be running on the company LAN? You would set the jmIRC to point to that IP for as the proxy server?

It could be anywhere on the Internet, it does not have to be your company LAN. It just needs to be on some machine that the BES server can connect to on port 80 (or whatever port you run the proxy on).

Does anyone know if BBirc allow encryption key exchange?
jmIRC is great, but is not implemented.

I have further questions on the proxy issues. My plan includes T-Mobile Web, no BES, which has the following opened ports:

25 TCP SMTP
110 TCP POP3
143 TCP IMAP

So what I've done is set up a WWW proxy on my home machine using WinGate on port 110. I know the proxy works because I can login normally on my mIRC on the computer with all the proxy information. However, when I try on the BlackBerry, I get the following error:

*** using HTTP proxy server to connect
*** connecting to example.irc.com at port 6667
*** Error trying to cnnect to IRC server, reason: Wrong password.

Bear in mind I also have a VNC server running - which my BlackBerry also connects to fine - on port 25. Any suggestions? The error occurs on any IRC server, password or no password required.

Well I did enjoy using Jmirc to connect to irc.smoothbeats.com or irc.ravetrax.com. But since I upgraded to .69 it seems like those two servers are the only two that give me errors. I can connect to dalnet efnet and anywhere else I try.

It would be convienant if jivetalk made an additional irc client *hint hint

My guess is that jmIrc needs to use its own HTTP proxy. I've not tried using a 3rd party proxy. The proxy provided with jmIrc has the capability to require a password for connections, so perhaps that's an extension from the standard proxy behaviour.

jmIrc seems to work fine for me on 4.5.0.52, but I only ever access one server.

* t-mobile (USA )

3rd party apps jmirc client
check in jmirc > adv opt > use socket pool
settings> adv opt >TCP > wap.voicestream.com
power cycle the phone
this may prove useful with other apps or BB enterprise


you may need to retry a few time before you connect

I assume that forces jmIrc to not use the default BES tunnelling. That's very useful information.

Guys, Gals:

BBIRC is just a copy of JMIRC. Essentially, it's the exact same. JMIRC is open source, free, and as a result, anyone can fork a new product off it.

As well, any coders could make improvements..... any RIM coders here and listening?

In fact -- BBIRC Uses the very same JMIRC source code..... for clarification. I used a trial of BBIRC and... it has the exact same flaws and omissions of JMIRC.

There is no COD/ALX file. Just download over the air. If you are technical, you CAN build a COD file from the JAD/JAR and use javaloader to upload it to your blackberry... Search the forums for how to do this, I posted the instructions for this about 3 years ago.

How to use the MIRC 0.95 on my CUrve 8310

anyone can help me how to operate JMIRC 0.95 on my curve 8310. Everytime i try to connect the system. it doesn't work well as in my window appears
