New Opera Mini 6 Great!

The new Opera Mini 6 is great on my BB 8300 Curve! Just noted the following:
- The track ball is flying (moving) very fast now.
- The menu layout is also appealing and its now easier to get into the Settings, Bookmarks, etc too!

Sounds like they've improved the cursor's movements which I found very poor in version 5.

Opera Mini 4.2 was also upgraded to 4.3. Some minor improvements (UI, share link to Facebook/Twitter, and ability to play YouTube vids in the media player).

Re: New Opera Mini 6 Great!

I'm a long time Opera Mini user, and I've been playing with the new Mini 6 on my 9550 Storm (VZW, OS 5) for a week or so now. Overall, it's faster and smoother than Mini 5. They've also fixed the annoying bug that left half the screen missing after editing text (and subsequently hiding the keyboard). That alone makes it a useful upgrade.

They've added a jump to the top or bottom of a page. When you fast scroll, a button pops up on the screen; tap it and it jumps to the end in the direction you were scrolling.

In testing, I was able to download a 10 MB, a 20 MB and an 80 MB file when connected via wifi, and it held through a phone call in the middle. In a test download over VZW without wifi enabled and with a short phone call interrupting, it was able to resume the download after the call.

The only annoyance I've found so far is that I can't edit a URL in the address bar. I can backspace over it. I can copy it out, edit it, and paste it back in. But I can't edit it within the address bar.

Mini 6 won't play flash, and doesn't support animated gifs (but it will open them in the native browser).

As with prior versions, Opera Mini converts web pages on their servers, then sends an optimized page to your phone. I find it much faster than the native browser with ordinary pages, especially large ones, and it dramatically reduces data usage if you get metered. It can present something similar to what my Blackberry calls the "page view" and the "column view", and jump back and forth between them quickly.

All in all, I'm quite satisfied with Opera Mini 6. To download it, make sure your native browser is set to blackberry mode (not firefox or IE), and go to http://m.opera.com. Go to the Opera Mini Forum for more info.

1. How do I jump to the top/bottom on my 8300?
2. Problems are single line editing rolling the track ball up/down does not move the cursor to the beginning/end of the single line being edited. Only way to move is through scrolling left/right character by character.
3. Multi-line editing slows down incredibly if text gets big.
4. The facebook photos are not viewable on OM6. In previous version there were no problems on facebook photos.

Can't really help much here, sorry - I have a storm, and use touch screen controls. I don't use facebook on my BB, either. The editing problem is an issue, though.

There are shortcuts, as mentioned on the Opera Mini board: "New Shortcuts! You can now select whether you'd like to use Opera Mini's shortcuts, or BlackBerry shortcuts through Tools -> Settings -> Advanced."

Re: New Opera Mini 6 Great!

I have just found a fifth problem:
5. It looks like some activities like scrolling up/down within Opera do not reset the blackberry idle event timer. So while I'm reading and scrolling down a long document my blackberry just locks up just as though I had put it aside to stay idle!

This is annoying.

Re: New Opera Mini 6 Great!

New release for blackberry (but it installs with the same version number). It installed on my storm without issue.

These are the changes listed:

Several issues when typing in a textfield have been fixed.

Performance when editing large text areas has been improved.

URL Auto-completion bug fixes.

Trackball up and down now jumps to the beginning and end of text in a single line text field.
