Pearl Custom Ringtones

Ok I just purchased a Tmobile Blackberry Pearl. I am trying to assign Custom Ringtones to Individuals in my Contacts. I am able to select the tone and set it however the Pearl wont ring that tone when that person calls, just rings the default ringer I have set. I called Tmob and they transfered me to RIM who says its a software issue and will be coming out with a new release in a few weeks to fix the bug. Is this true can anyone help me work around this or do I need to wait for the update.

I had that problem also. After you set the ringtone, try a battery pull and see if that fixes the issue.

Nope sorry that did not work any other ideas? Is it true about a new update, the RIM tech said there are "several issues"

Are you using the original OS from T-Mobile, or have you upgraded to the Rogers OS?

Harleerider 10-08-2006 09:51 PM

Just got it yesterday it has the original tmobile , what is the rogers os? will it all work if I upgrade and how do i find it ? Thanks

Ok im gonna go for it, do i need to wipe my pearl or just install the upgrade?

kasperapd 10-08-2006 09:59 PM

Read through the thread for the instructions. Pretty easy and no wipe is necessary.

Harleerider 10-08-2006 10:01 PM

downloading it now, thanks so much I guess you are using it and it works!

kasperapd 10-08-2006 10:04 PM

Yep, working good. Fixes some of the bugs from the T-Mobile version.

Harleerider 10-09-2006 07:28 AM

Ok I did the upgrade, but it seems nothing changed. Ringers still noy working right, anyone that can help me with this thanks ahead of time.

kasperapd 10-09-2006 10:06 AM

Well, I'm not sure what else to tell you. I simply went into my contacts, added the custom ringtone and saved it. If you are doing all of that already, then I stumped on why yours is not working.

Harleerider 10-09-2006 11:41 AM

where did you save your ringers, I have mine on a media card, in the ringtones folder.

kasperapd 10-09-2006 11:46 AM

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Have mine in the same place.

Harleerider 10-09-2006 12:02 PM

maybe I will take this one back and get another Pearl.

Liv 10-09-2006 07:06 PM

That is probably the best idea.

When you have exhausted all of the options get it switched out.

kasperapd 10-09-2006 10:12 PM

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, let me know how you end up getting it fixed.

xyrcncp 10-09-2006 11:12 PM

So you've gone to Profiles, then <Menu> New Exception and named the exception, added the name(s) of your contact(s), clicked Custom Phone Tune, picked a tune and saved the Exception and nothing? I've had my contacts with custom ringtones from day one and not one problem, if your exceptions are set correctly then yeah, you might want to switch phones. I have my ringtones saved in the phone's memory btw.

Setting a Custom Ringtone

I have about 100 .mp3 files saved to my phone and more than half of those are assigned to individual entires (I pick a song that reminds me of that person). This is how I did it:

1) Load individual files via BB Desktop Manager into the RINGTONES folder on the SD card. When you plug your Pearl into the comp via the USB, it might ask you if you want to diable Mass Media Storage. Choose NO.
2) Go into the ADDRESS BOOK (not the CALL LOG) and find the individual you'd like to have a custom ring tone.
3) Click on the MENU button and scroll down to EDIT.
4)When you are in the EDIT ADDRESS window, click the trackball once and select ADD CUSTOM PHONE TUNE.
5) It will automatically bring you down to CUSTOM PHONE TUNE and click on the default ringer.
6) A new Menu will appear with the Ringers you have installed on it as well as the default tones that are available. If you do not see your ringtones, scroll up to BROWSE and open your Media Card file and then select the ringtone you want.
7) SAVE the changes and you're set.

I have not had any trouble setting up any of these ringtones and they all work properly.

Some quirky stuff:
- I changed my profile settings so that when it is on vibrate and tone, it will vibrate only ONCE before the ringtone starts. I believe it defaults at 3 and that was very annoying.
- Some of my ringers are a bit longer (like the Bee Gee's How Deep is Your Love =P) so if I have my SMS msgs set to a longer ringtone, even after I've read the message, it will continue to play until the file is done. It doesn't stop once I've read it! VERY annoying.
