There you go.

It may be safe to assume that even if there is another SIM in the device and even if there is a data plan, you probably still won't be able to do anything. But if you've waited until you lost you BlackBerry to worry about wiping it, you've already messed up long before that. A password with a suitable timeout is still your best means of protecting your data. And I have my doubts about recovering a lost or stolen BlackBerry because of the tracking feature.

I'm repeating myself, but the automatic remote backup and ability to restore to another BlackBerry is THE big thing with BlackBerry Protect, in my opinion.

I haven't had the chance to actually try it but I don't think it's safe to assume this...

The BB identification is not SIM related as far as the hardware is concerned. If you change SIM you are just changing whoever is 'active' on the phone (in simple terms).

Even if you turn the phone on with a new SIM it tries to activate itself on the network. BIS is a RIM thing not the carrier and I expect the 'owner' who installs the app can do what the application says it can do so long as the hardware is capable (GPS related activities).

Simple answer - NO SIM, NO WORK.

Technically - even if the SIM was replaced with a new one, it would work, as long as the device had connectivity through a data plan of sorts. BES's all have the kill feature built in, but it still requires a data plan to use that feature. Makes no difference which SIM - as long as there's a data plan on it

Good points. What I neglected to consider in my previous post is that if the BlackBerry is still associated with your BIS, then the person who has your lost or stolen BlackBerry cannot link it to their BIS, in the case where the other person sets up a BIS account and tried to use it with your BlackBerry.

OK, I just downloaded and installed from App World. When I run it I get the message:

You cannot install Blackberry Protect it is not compatible with devices that use Blackberry Enterprise Server.

Problem is I am not on BES. I have a Rogers Wireless BIS data plan. The hardware I have is a unlocked Telus Storm2 with OS v5.0.0.983 (Bundle 1612, Platform 4.2.0.427).

BTW I also run AstraSync v4.2.18 which really is a OWA client not BES.
