Pictures in .jpg.rem
 

I know it's been said around here on how to fix this problem, but I still can't get those picture to show up. I've searched the forums and kept getting the same information.

I've tried opening the Roxio Media Manager, it doesn't even see the .rem files. So I can't copy them through the program, which supposedly decrypts them.

I try copying them through the Mass Media Mode, and then delete the .rem extension, and the pictures still don't come up.

I'm at a loss here guys, if I'm doing something wrong please let me know.

Dude, use Media Manager (part of Blackberry Desktop Manager)... that app asks for your device password and decrypts on the fly as the files are copied over to your desktop.

Yeah, the Roxio program is the Media Manager, but it doesn't even see the .jpg.rem files. I guess it doesn't think the encryted files are media. And I didn't put a password when I encrypted, I chose device, would that make a difference?

Roxio is an after-market program.. and has nothing to do with Blackberry.

is that you need to open up the BlackBerry program Desktop Manager, and
use the "Media Manager" application that is on there.

When you connect your device to your computer with DM (Desktop Manager) running, it will ask you for your device's password, and after successfully entering it, it will decrypt the files.. basically saying it will remove the .rem extension that has got you all messed up. This is for when you are transferring files to your desktop from the device/SD card.

Also.. alternatively you can just go into the Options -> Security Settings menu, hit General Options, and disable Content Protection. Restart your device by powercycling/hard reboot, and reconnect to your computer.

The Roxio MM opens when I click on the MM in the BBDesktop Manager application. Is there any other way or any other program that I can use to get these files off. If I just use it as a Mass Media Storage Device, I don't believe it gets decrypted when I copy them off and remove the file extension. If I use Roxio, I can't see the files at all, because they still have the .rem extension on my phone. I've tried changing the encryption over to a password, and logged onto my BB from my computer, and power cycled it, with the content protection off, and it still keeps the pictures the way they were. If worse comes to worse, I'll just forget it, I only have a few on my phone and it's not worth the hassle, just very annoying.

The latest DM v4.2 SP2 has a Roxio version of Media Manager. It's built into the Desktop Manager. It's been out for quite some time.

Really? It's a Roxio program now? Man.. Shows how much I use it.

Check through this thread... will give you a better understanding of what you might need to do in order to fix your issue with the .rem encrypted files.

Ooh OK, that's interesting then. I didn't recognise Roxio as being affiliated with Media Manager, I must admit (but I am using a slightly older version of DTM whose Media Manager doesn't carry the Roxio name). Sorry for the confusion there.
The encryption (when using device key) will tie in the device's specific details with the data on the media card, so theoretically the files can only be accessed from that device. With mine when using Media Manager, I can see all the .rem files on the media card and copy them over to the desktop (which will decrypt them and make them accessible on the PC). Mass storage mode won't work, as the files when extracted from the device will still be in an encrypted state.

I'll try the newest version here and let u know how it goes.

EDIT: WOW that's swelled! The previous version I had (base 4.2) is ~45MB... this one's a 231MB download! I hope it works after this ;-)

Confirmed... this new bloatware Roxio Media Manager doesn't work for me at all :-( I can see files 'n' folders on the device's (unencrypted) internal memory, but the external media card won't show me anything (it gives an error saying "please enable mass storage mode"... I don't want to because it doesn't honour the device's external encryption! I actually have it disabled by IT policy LOL!)

Why oh why RIM? :-(

... but to the OP: if you download the older version of DTM (the <50MB version... it's still on the download page), you will be able to decrypt the files when transferring them off of the device!

What a pile of p00 this seems to be. The Roxio manager seems to offer loads of functionality you DON'T want and has removed lots you DO want. Good grief - a trumph of creeping featurism over utility :-(

I won't repeat what I've put here but the whole way encryption kinda now works on the Media Card is one big incentive NOT to use it as it's so complicated to predict how it's going to behave :-( And security is supposed to be a RIM *strong* point. Doh!

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll try the earlier version and see if that works. Roxio is a pain, I don't even know why they included it, I was totally content with the previous Media Manager.

I'm not sure if you're still stuck or not. When you plug your BB in, make sure that you cancel the request when the screen states:
'Mass Storage Mode is being activated. Enter your device password to grant access:'

Once that's bypassed by the return arrow, you can open up Desktop Manager and go into Media Manager. Hopefully media card should show up there (I'm assuming your photos are on the media card, and not the device memory)

You should be able to go into 'Media Card' and copy your photos from there. Hopefully this helps...

This at least works for me using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.2.0.14.

Hopefully I'm somewhere in the same ballpark of what you're trying to figure out, but if not, disregard it.

Is there any way to "revert" to the older BB software? It seems like my new Blackberry 8300 got riddled with the 4.2.2.12 Desktop Software that uses the Roxio Media Mgr... ow!

I did find a solution though: disabling "media files" encryption, then moving the files from one folder to another under the media explorer works fine... but I would have to do this procedure one by one, as that explorer doesn't let me multi-select!!!

This is my first Blackberry, and I definitely want to use the security features, but it seems like .rem files are rendered useless because of the Roxio bloatware... :-(

I am having the same problem. Disabling content compression, rebooting the device, and trying media manager do not work. I have been able to Text the pictures to my email account and get them back that way. I must say, this is my first black berry and I am very disappointed in how it operates. This is just another of many finiky problems I have had. Don't buy the 8320 on T-mobile

Hardly a reason to "not buy the 8320 on T-Mobile." I believe it's because you have encrypted the media card.

Yep, if you enable encryption on the memory card this is the issue you will see. It happens with all Blackberry devices, not just ones sold by T-Mobile. :)

What About if your are on a Corp BB, and they have stripped off BOTH the Application Icon AND Roxio Media Manager (Desktop ver 4.2 or higher)

also, while tethered...it will not allow file transfers between MicroSD card & Laptop..

The only way I can get them on my PC is to:

A) email them back to myself...so it converts to .jpg

and/or

B) take a all-in-one stick, slap the MicroSD card and transfer....in the .rem format.

How do I convert it then??!

Why can't you just turn off encryption on your Media Card, on the BB? Then remove the Media Card from the BB and read it on any PC?

i need help. i want to resave the pictures from my microSD card onto my computer. there is one problem my phone saves the pictures as .jpg.rem How can i save each picture onto my computer without deleting the pics? i have over 20 pics that are saved as .jpg.rem :x
