Wifi Calling?
I got a new plan yesterday and my plan includes unlimited local wifi calling, but I have no idea what this is and forgot to ask them. Can someone please tell me what wifi calling is and how I can do it?

Your 9700 has (rather, may have) the capability to connect to a wi-fi network. Find the manage connections icon on your applications screen and click on it, and go from there. Also read about wif connections in the Help app on the blackberry. In short, you enable wifi, then click setup wifi, and follow the instructions from there.
Some blackberrys and carrier networks support UMA (google it). This provides the capability to make voice calls over the wifi network. This capability is dependent on both the blackberry and the carrier. I believe (from quick look via google) that Rogers has it. Not all carrier-branded 9700's have it. So, you setup a wifi connection, and when you are connected you should see UMA in place of GPRS/EDGE/3G, and voice calls will go via wifi instead of the mobile network. |
Well I am with Rogers and it says its included with my plan so they must have it.. I connect to my home router and the wifi logo goes white, so is it automatically wifi calls from there on?

Do you also see the UMA acronym where you would normally see GPRS or EDGE or 3G? If so, then the device is using wifi for voice calls.
The sharp white logo vice grey indicates you are connected to the BlackBerry/RIM data network. |
is it supposed to say UMA or what? I still see 3G sorry I'm not great with this

If you see 3G and the white wifi logo, then voice is on the mobile network and blackberry data is on wifi.
Open device options and select mobile network. What do you see there? Do you have a setting for Connection Preference? What I see for options is mobile network only/mobile network preferred/wifi only/wifi preferred. If you see that and it is set to mobile or mobile preferred, change it to wifi preferred. |
Mine is like this:
Data Services: On While Roaming: Prompt Mobile Network: ROGERS Network Selection Mode: Automatic Network mode: 3G & 2G |
So, you do not have the 'connection preference' option located between 'while roaming' and 'mobile network'?
It's over my head. I'm guessing your device is supposed to automatically choose, but I don't know why it is not. I thought UMA devices had that setting. Maybe I was wrong. See what others say. By the way, is that a Rogers-branded 9700? |
No I don't see that
Also no, it's an unlocked bell 9700 |
I believe that's the answer.

not true - all 9700 hardware is identical - some functionality (eg 3g frequencies) is controlled in software/firmware by the vendor id/vsm (& until we get an updated mfi, we can't load a different vsm like we could older bb's) but uma hardware is there in all 9700's - thanks to the hard work of many others, I have tmo uma working on my att-branded 9700 & 9800 bb's - was just a matter of unlocking the engineering screens, downloading the tmo certs, & creating the proper uma profile.
this link seems to be closest to your particular situation (bell/rogers) - maybe it'll help: ugh: I can't post links yet - go to howardforums & search for the thread titled UMA WORKING!! Unlocked Bell 9700 -> Rogers Talkspot! OMG (it's thread #1626452) |
