Tour "Alt" Shortcuts Not Working

I used to own the Blackberry Curve, which had alt-i and alt-o shortcuts for incoming and outgoing mail. I now own the Tour which didn't come out of the box with the alt shortcut keys working. I tried to set them up manually with no success. Any suggestions?

Do you have the Messages list open when you press ALT I and ALT O ?
