OS: 9700 5.0.0.1149/5.0.0.680 (East Asia + English)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1149 (EastAsia)

Package Version: 5.0.0.1149
Consisting of:

* Applications: 5.0.0.680
* Software Platform: 5.1.0.160
* File name: 9700jEastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel1149_PL5.1.0.160_A5.0.0. 680_Hutchison.exe
* File size: 128.04MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

* Download Software: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...2BAA6EBC8B872D

Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 9700:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a black "BlackBerry" screen with a status bar for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again, and it should load the OS to the device.

For the previous OS, see this link: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...languages.html

I am in process of upgrading too.

eugenedabeast 05-25-2010 08:37 PM

yes, post up!!!

lovescakemix 05-25-2010 09:09 PM

i think its good.
i experience some lag with .656 when password unlocking.
i dont see any of that now.

Rob377 05-25-2010 10:11 PM

Just upgraded.

Looks like the problem with OS X calendar sync is still present from .656. Deal Breaker. Back to .593 for me at least.

In other news, it does seem a bit more responsive.

vandal 05-26-2010 06:42 PM

OH one thing I just noticed is that rebooting doesnt take nearly as long anymore, good deal!

It never does after a fresh upgrade... but over time it will slow down. It has nothing to do with the OS itself, but rather with the build up of residual "gunk" over time, caused by installing/uninstalling apps over and over...

DeanQ 05-26-2010 09:42 PM

Before I wasted my time upgrading to this, can someone do a quick test for me. I am on version 5.0.0.593. Before I upgraded to .593, I had one of the older version os's to where the lock button actually locked vs the new stand by feature. I found something annoying or possibly broken with .593. This may sound trivial, but I use the visual voice mail a lot and before version .593 I could play my visual voice mail and easily hit the speaker phone icon to transfer the audio from the handset to the speaker phone easily. This no longer works with .593. When I first play the visual voice mail, I now have to hit the menu button -> scroll down and select activate speakerphone every time for a freakin voice mail. I hate to waste my time downloading it and installing it if its doing the same crap. So please someone try and listen to a visual voicemail and when you first play it hit the speakerphone button to see if it works. If you have version .656 please try it on that version as well.

Oh yea and I am a TMO user.
Thanks.

Can someone remind me whether I will have the option of choosing which apps get reinstalled after the OS upgrades? I've done these a hundred times, but it's been a while and I can't recall whether those options come up during the OS install.

Basically my boot time is horrendous and I'd like to cull out some of the apps I have installed without starting from a factory reset.

I suspect, though, that a factory reset is what I really need.

Yes, the loader will give you the option to check/uncheck "ancillary" RIM apps and 3rd party apps to include/exclude them from the installed software.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I was pretty sure that option screen popped up during OS install, but like I said, it's been a while....

This build seems fine. I am guessing the radio may be a bit better as I live on a fringe area and my batter drain seems better after one day. With the last one I was just keeping it on 2G because of how fast it would drain. Now I have it set for both and it still isn't draining as fast as 2G alone.

For some reason Enterprise Activation did not go through after the upgrade. Google activation did not go through either.

OK, I installed this OS overnight. Boot time is a fraction of what it used to be.

However, I'm running into a problem playing media files. Every time I try to open any media file - audio or video - I get an "Unable to load content" error. I remember hitting this issue on an earlier OS version as well (can't remember which version though).

Is there a fix, or am I stuck using other media devices as a workaround (or rolling back to .593)?

Are you using Ubertwitter? What third party apps do you have loaded that could be different?

Nope, no twitter clients at all.

I've got a raft of third-party apps installed, and I haven't had any problems on .593. I found my older posts about the same problem - it was with .566.

You know, I have not tried the old battery pull - I've just done keyboard resets. I'll give that a whirl and see if it helps.

I don't know why I always forget that simple option. I'll report back in a few.

Plug into a PC and use mass storage mode.
Delte all .dat files in video and pic areas
disconnect phone and let it rebuild the list.

Mine took a while to rebuild.

No dice.

I remember there was a similar issue with 4.5 on my 8800, had to remove dat files or reformat the card.

Even after rebuilding the dat files I still get the same errors.

I can view and take pics, I can record voice notes. I cannot play music, ringtones, or videos. Very strange. I'll have to double-check whether I removed a critical cod file from the java folder, but I'm always very careful about those...

I have your same exact problem and i am also careful into what .cod files i can delete to shrink the OS. What im thinking is just loading the entire OS except games .cod's.

Ill see what i can find, thanks for your informative post.(y)

I tried replacing any medialoader related cod files I had removed - basically the sample video and sample wallpapers - and I still can't open mp3s or videos.

Interestingly, the App World icon did not show up after the OS install. That didn't surprise me, since it is a common issue.

But after reinstalling App World, running it, and even installing something from it, the icon disappeared again after a battery pull. Seems like something just isn't sticking.

I don't have any way of checking current file associations, so I'm not sure if that's the problem, but the device is certainly acting like it. I've tinkered a little with module permissions to see whether that could be the cause, but no success yet.

Quite honestly, I've just installed xPlayer as a workaround. Sigh. The quest continues...

WOW, crazy that you had to install a third party replacement app, sorry to hear that.

I'm still trying different kinds of combination. Just for kicks, ill even try loading the other .680 variants from GeoCell, etisalat and Zain Jordan.

Good Luck.

After the upgrade I could not sync the calendar from Outlook 2003, while contacts, tasks and note were fine. It was very complicated to resolve this issue and I tried so many things that I am not sure what eventually got it working.

East Asia will work fine - any OS download you see at the top of this forum will have English. I'd recommend getting the latest 5.0.0.680.

anyone have issues with bluetooth connections?? i am unable to connect to other blackberry phones post this update. the ones in my list work fine but new devices it says connection failed. anyone........

[dajuice] 06-09-2010 08:37 AM

I have tried to follow the instructions on how to install the firmware but cannot seem to bring it up as a valid install for a 9700 on Rogers Canada or a 9700 on Telus Canada.

I was able to load 593 onto a T-Mobile but also no 680

When I open the apploader and plug in my BB's it doesnt show up with the OS as an upgrade, only shows 3rd party apps on the device with options to remove. I have removed the vendor.xml as per the instruction. Any other suggestions on why I cannot load newer firmware?

how to overcome the key lock icon missing

I just wanted to share a new experience with bb 9700.
I too had a problem of lock icon missing after upgrade.just last week I purchased bb 9700 with a holster where the head of the instrument protrudes over the neck of the holster(don't know why).
I also upgraded to os 5.0.0.593 &my lock icon was missing.I locked the key pad by pressing A and my bb got locked.I put it in side the holster. For some reason I pulled my bb out of holster.WOOW.the phone automatically got UNLOCKED.what a pleasent surprice.try it out friends.

Can anyone help, on the app page where you select what you want to download, I can find all my apps but the actual OS update. can anyone help?

briandewitt 10-15-2010 12:17 PM

Downloading now.

I haven't been staying on top of the latest versions lately. A week ago I "upgraded" to 5.0.0.602 and that version is rubbish. After reading everything posted here about .862 on down to .680, I'm going to try .680 before going closer to the newest. I will report back in a day or so. :)

UPDATE: Finished install. So far, boot takes the same time as before.

The wizard that walks you through basic setup and how to use the phone on its "first boot" is new and slick.

Backing up device based on http://www.blackberryforums.com/afte...arty-apps.html still works basically the same way on BBDesktop 6. Right now trying the Add function.
